Sir Robert Menzies had an abiding passion for cricket and cricket is
therefore a natural item in any Menzies remembrance program. The Menzies
Foundation has therefore been involved in various cricket activities
since its inception in 1979.
Sir Robert Menzies Scholarship for Cricket
As part of the Menzies Foundation’s 25th
Anniversary celebrations in 2004, the Foundation joined with
Cricket Australia in establishing a Sir Robert Menzies
Scholarship for cricket. Mr
Paul Sheahan, a former Director and current Council Member of the Foundation,
is the Foundation’s nominee on the
Selection Panel.
The scholarship is
awarded to a talented young athlete (male or female) who has been
selected for an Australian Institute of Sport Cricket Scholarship.
The Foundation also provides a medallion which was designed in
1979 by Stuart Devlin. It depicts eleven cricketers in various
aspects of the game.
The inaugural award was made to Mr
George Bailey, a batsman and medium
pace bowler from Tasmania. |
