1982 Menzies
Scholar in Law
In 1982, I had the great honour of being the first Menzies Scholar in Law. I grew up in Perth and completed the two-year BCL at
Magdalen College in Oxford in 1984.
After
a brief time in London at Freshfields, I joined Davis, Polk & Wardwell,
an old Wall Street law firm. I became a partner in 1994 specializing
in corporate finance, with a particular emphasis on initial
public offerings of securities and corporate transactions by
retailers. In addition, I manage our corporate finance group
which numbers over 80 lawyers and have responsibility for the
lawyers in our foreign offices. Worldwide, we are always looking
for smart, talented young lawyers.
I live just outside New York
City in a leafy, green suburb on Long Island Sound. I am married
to a New Yorker, and we have three children. Although my job
and family keep me firmly tied to New York, we enjoy our annual
visits to Australia and our residence in Perth overlooking
the Indian Ocean. |

DAVID
BOND

|
1994 Menzies Scholar
in Engineering
I grew up in the small country Victorian dairy farming town of Panmure, about 250km west of Melbourne. I joined the Royal
Australian Air Force (RAAF) on completion of my secondary education
and moved to Canberra as an engineering cadet at the Australian
Defence Force Academy. After military graduation in 1990, I
completed my aeronautical engineering bachelors degree at the
University of Sydney in 1991 (University Medallist).
From Sydney, the RAAF posted
me to No. 492 Squadron to lead the P-3C Orion maritime patrol
aircraft, airframe and engine design office. At the end of 1993
I was awarded the Menzies Memorial Scholarship in Engineering
which allowed me to pursue a research interest in the application
of adhesively bonded repairs to primary aircraft structure. I
read for a PhD at the University of Surrey on the "Adhesively
bonded repair of fibre reinforced composites". My research had
particular emphasis on examining the effect of environmental
exposure on the performance of bonded repairs to aircraft structure
(Supervised by Professor Mike Bader and Dr Paul Smith and assessed
by Professor Tony Kinloch of Imperial College).
I returned to the RAAF in 1996
as the RAAF design engineer for the F/A-18 full-scale fatigue
test and the Australian Defence Force (ADF) Airworthiness Engineer
for composite and adhesively bonded aircraft structures. I now
work as an R&D project
team leader for British Aerospace Australia.
