DR PHILIP HARDCASTLE

1982 Menzies Memorial Scholar in Medicine

I was born in Sydney (1949) and initially attended Scotch College and later Inverell High School in northern New South Wales.  After six years of medicine at Sydney University I trained at RPAH and then Sydney Hospital before entering the Orthopaedic Training Program at Oswestry, UK.  From there I had an AO Scholarship doing trauma surgery in Austria for three months.

I worked as a senior orthopaedic registrar in Perth before being awarded the Menzies Scholarship in Medicine to train in Spinal Surgery in the UK and the USA.  My initial consultancy was senior lecturer in Orthopaedic Surgery with a special interest in spinal disorders at the University of WA working with the Hollywood Orthopaedic Service.  I was then appointed as a Consultant Surgeon on the Spinal Injuries Unit at the RPR Hospital where I have continued to work.

Spinal disorders involves a diverse area involving spinal trauma, tumour work, acute and chronic spinal disorders.  Since my return I have introduced a number of new techniques in spinal surgery to this country and have special interest in trauma, both major and sporting.

My main areas of academic interest are in clinical studies with respect to spinal pain and I have been involved in a number of studies with fast bowlers though the University of WA, functional outcome studies on paraplegics and outcome studies on patients undergoing spinal fusion or the newer Graf procedure for patients with chronic pain.  My more recent research interests have been in the development of anterior interbody fixation devices for spinal fusion in the cervical and lumbar spine.

The Menzies Scholarship provided me with a platform to pursue these interests and I am indebted to the Menzies Trust and Foundation for this opportunity.

I play polo as well as coach and referee rugby union.  I have three sons and a daughter.  My present goals are firstly to improve the assessment and necessity for spinal surgery in a wide variety of different conditions, particularly chronic pain and also in the development of improved internal fixation systems available to achieve such goals.

LEANNE
HASSETT

2005 Menzies Scholar in the Allied Health Sciences

Leanne Hassett holds the degree of Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy) and Master of Health Science (Neurological Physiotherapy) from the University of Sydney.

Leanne's PhD project is entitled "Fitness training after traumatic brain injury".   Cardiorespiratory fitness is commonly reduced in people with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and restricts participation in work and leisure activities.  This project will determine the effectiveness of fitness training for people with TBI and validate a field test for cardiorespiratory fitness.  It will make a substantial contribution toward evidence-based rehabilitation for people with TBI.

DR JULIE
HIDES

1993 Menzies Scholar in the Allied Health Sciences

I was born and raised in Brisbane and studied Physiotherapy at the University of Queensland. I returned to the Department of Physiotherapy to complete a Master of Physiotherapy Studies program in Manipulative Physiotherapy in 1990 and then went on to complete my PhD at the University of Queensland in 1996. For my PhD, I conducted a randomised clinical trial that investigated the effect of low back pain on a deep back muscle (the multifidus), the natural course of recovery of the muscle and the effectiveness of specific exercises on multifides muscle recovery and recurrence of symptoms.

On the basis of this research and that of my three co-researchers (one of whom is Professor Paul Hodges who was the 1994 Menzies scholar in the Allied Health Sciences), we established the Joint Stability Assessment Clinic at the Department of Physiotherapy at the University of Queensland. I am the Clinical Supervisor of this research clinic, which assesses the ability of the muscles to protect the spine and hence provide pain relief and decrease recurrence of symptoms.

Apart from this I regularly teach in this area, have co-authored a textbook and work part time at the Mater Public Hospital in Brisbane.

I also have a really rather hectic family life. It is a busy life but a fulfilling one.
