Maria McCarthy holds the degrees of Master of Applied Science (Family Therapy) (1998), a Postgraduate Graduate Diploma of Family Therapy (1992) and a Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology) (1985) from La Trobe University.

Maria's PhD project is entitled "Identifying psycho-social risk in families of newly diagnosed paediatric oncology patients" and is being carried out at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, Melbourne.
