SIR ROBERT MENZIES MEMORIAL RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP
IN THE ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES

This research scholarship, which is valued at $25,000 per annum for each of two years, is open to graduates in any of the health sciences who have enrolled for a PhD in an Australian University and who have completed the first stage of their doctoral program.

The Foundation is grateful for the support of the final selection committee and the assessors who are nominated by the respective disciplines to grade the applications in terms of topic, relevance and methodology.

In 2008 the scholarship attracted a field of 25 candidates and the disciplines included physiotherapy, speech pathology, psychology, nutrition, sports science and orthoptics. In addition to grading by the discipline assessors, the academic qualifications and publication record of each candidate and the scientific validity of the various projects were carefully considered.

Interviews were held in Melbourne on 26 August, 2008. The interview panel consisted of Professor John Coghlan (Executive Director, The Menzies Foundation), Professor Alison Perry (La Trobe University), Assoc Professor Jennifer Boldero (University of Melbourne) and Dr Deborah Walsh (University of Queensland and previous Menzies Scholar). The Foundation's General Manager, Sandra Mackenzie was Secretary to the Committee.

The Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Research Scholarships in the Allied Health Sciences for 2009-2010 have been awarded to Ms Anne-Marie Hill and Mr Phillip Tully.

Ms Anne-Marie Hill holds the degree of Master of Physiotherapy (2001) from Curtin University of Technology.

Her PhD project is entitled "The role of patient education in prevention of in-hospital falls in the older population" and will be carried out at the University of Queensland.

 

Mr Phillip Tully holds the degree of Bachelor of Health Sciences (Psychology) with First Class Honours from the University of Adelaide (2004).

His PhD project is entitled "Quality of life outcomes after cardiac surgery" and will be carried out at the University of Adelaide.

SIR ROBERT MENZIES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS IN ENGINEERING

The Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Trust, with the financial support of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and of the Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Foundation in Australia, offers to Australians one post-graduate scholarship in engineering for tenure at universities in the United Kingdom for either one, two or three academic years.

Three applicants were invited for interview in Melbourne on 30 July 2008. The Selection Committee was Professor Graham Hutchinson (Professor of Civil Engineering, The University of Melbourne), Dr Andrew Whiting (previous Menzies Scholar), Mr Anthony Madley (British Deputy Consul-General representing the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office) and Ms Tracy Harris (representing DEEWR Australian Education International).  Ms Sandra Mackenzie (General Manager, Menzies Foundation) was also in attendance.

The Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Scholarship in Engineering for 2008 was awarded to Mr Rohan Shekhar.

Rohan holds the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Mechatronic Engineering) from the University of Queensland with First Class Honours and the University Medal.  He will undertake a PhD at Cambridge University for three years commencing in October 2008.

SIR ROBERT MENZIES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS IN LAW

The Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Trust, with the financial support of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations and of the Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Foundation in Australia, offers to Australians post-graduate scholarships in law for tenure at universities in the United Kingdom.

There were 40 applications for the two law scholarships that were available for 2009.  One application was returned because the candidate had not completed their law degree at the time of application.

The applications were forwarded to a panel for ranking by the Hon Sir Daryl Dawson, the Hon Sir Guy Green, the Hon Justice Susan Kenny, Mr Brian Doyle and Mr Mark Darian-Smith.

The six most highly ranked candidates were invited for interview in Melbourne on 17 October, 2008.

The Selection Committee chaired by the Hon Sir Daryl Dawson (Menzies Foundation Chairman) were the Hon Justice Susan Kenny (Federal Court and previous Menzies Scholar), Professor Michael Bryan (University of Melbourne), Mr Stuart Gill (British Consul-General representing the Foreign and Commonwealth Office) and Ms Rebecca Young (representing the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations).  Ms Sandra Mackenzie (Menzies Foundation General Manager) was also in attendance.

The Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Scholarships in Law for 2009 were awarded to Mr Thomas Prince and Ms Aparna Rao.

Thomas Prince holds the degrees of LLB with First Class Honours and the University Medal (2008) and BSc with First Class Honours and the University Medal (2006) from the University of Sydney.

Tom will undertake the degree of LLM at University College London commencing in October 2009.

Aparna Rao holds the degrees of LLB with First Class Honours and the University Medal and BSc (2007) from the Australian National University.

Aparna will undertake the degrees of BCL and MPhil at Oxford University commencing in October 2009.

 

R G MENZIES FELLOWSHIP

The Foundation in 1996 made the inaugural contribution to the National Health and Medical Research Council's (NH MRC) CJ Martin/Neil Hamilton Fairley Fellowships with one of the Fellowships to be named the NH MRC/RG Menzies Fellowship. These Fellowships are available for postgraduate medical study at approved overseas institutions with tenure for up to four years. Two years are spent in the overseas country followed by two years back in Australia. The Foundation has made available a supplementation of $5,000 for each of the four years of the award for activities associated with the NH MRC/RG Menzies Fellowship, eg conference travel.

Dr Ken C Pang from the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, was awarded the 2007 NHMRC/RG Menzies Fellowship.

Ken will take up his Fellowship in 2008 at the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Harvard University. His study is "RNA transport: a new paradigm in cell-to-cell communication".

ROBERT GORDON MENZIES SCHOLARSHIP TO HARVARD UNIVERSITY

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Robert Gordon Menzies Scholarship to Harvard University established by the Harvard alumni in Australia in honour of Australia’s longest serving Prime Minister. The scholarship is jointly sponsored by The Harvard Club of Australia, the Australian National University and the Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Foundation and is administered by the ANU.  The scholarship is awarded to scholars on the basis of their potential for making a significant contribution to Australia and their intellectual ability, leadership qualities and breadth of vision.  The Menzies Foundation was represented in the selection process by Ms Edwina Menzies.

The recipients of the US$50,000 scholarship for 2008 are Dr Clare Barnett, a medical resident in neonatal services at Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne and Ms Maja Cassidy, a Masters student in Electrical Engineering at the University of New South Wales.

Dr Clare Barnett is a graduate of Monash University and will undertake a Masters of Public Health in International Health at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Maja Cassidy graduated with 1st Class Honours in Electrical Engineering from UNSW and will undertake a Doctorate in Applied Physics in the School of Engineering and Applied Science.  Maja has undertaken research on developing high frequency readout systems for quantum computing devices.
