Sir Daryl Dawson
We are pleased to welcome the Hon. Sir Daryl Dawson as the new Chairman of the Menzies Foundation. Sir Daryl retired as a Justice of the High Court of Australia in 1982 after 15 years service on that Court. Previously, he was Queen's Counsel, practising at the Victorian Bar and in other States. From 1974 to 1982 he was Solicitor-General for the State of Victoria.
Sir Daryl was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1980, was created a Knight Commander of the British Empire in 1982 and was made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1986. He is a graduate of both the University of Melbourne and Yale University.
He is currently a Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne and an Adjunct Professor of Monash University. He is also a non-permanent member of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal and a Governor of the Ian Potter Foundation. He is presently engaged as Chairman of the Royal Commission into the Gas Explosion at Longford.

We are also pleased to welcome Professor John Coghlan, AO, as the new Executive Director of the Menzies Foundation. Professor Coghlan has been associated with the Howard Florey Institute for more than 40 years. He was Assistant Director of the Institute from 1971 to 1976, Deputy Director from 1976 to 1989 and Director from 1990 to 1996.
Professor Coghlan has an impressive record in medical research and scientific administration. He was Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Melbourne, Deputy Chairman and Chairman of the Medical Research Committee of the National Health & Medical Research Council with his involvement with NHMRC spanning more than 25 years.
In 1988 he was awarded the prestigious Dale Medal of the British Endocrine Society, the first Australian recipient. He was awarded the inaugural Ramaciotti Medal and Prize in 1995.
He is currently a member of the Council of the Museum of Victoria, on the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Ramaciotti Foundations and the Simon and Vera Vietal Foundation. He has also served on the Board of the Australian Ballet School and the Australian Ballet Development Corporation, which built the new home for the company's school.
