The Directors, Council and staff of the Menzies Foundation have expressed their sadness at the passing of Professor John Coghlan AO, who served as Executive Director of the Foundation for over 10 years from the late ‘90s.

Professor Coghlan had a range of senior roles with the Howard Florey Institute with which he was associated for over 40 years.

He oversaw the Foundation’s involvement with the development of the Menzies Centre for Health Policy and the creation of the Menzies Virtual Museum.

Professor Coghlan had an impressive record in medical research and scientific administration. He was Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Melbourne, Deputy Chairman of the Medical Research Committee of the NHMRC and served on multiple boards, including the Australian Ballet School.

He became an Officer of the Order of Australia (General Division) in recognition of his service to scientific and medical research, particularly in the field of endocrinology.
